More about keloid scars

Keloid scars develop due to an overactive healing response in some individuals. When your skin is injured, whether through a cut, burn, or even acne, your body produces collagen to repair the damage. In the case of keloid formation, the body produces too much collagen, causing the scar tissue to grow beyond the boundaries of the original injury. Genetics also play a significant role, as people with a family history of keloids are more prone to developing them. Additionally, factors like skin type, age, and tension on the wound site can influence keloid formation. The trunk and ears are especially prone to keloid formation. It’s essential to keep in mind that not everyone is equally susceptible to keloids, and their development can vary from person to person.

How do you remove keloid scars?

Treating keloid scars can be challenging, but several options can help improve their appearance and reduce discomfort. It’s important to note that results can vary.

  1. Silicone Gel or Sheets: Applying silicone-based products can flatten and soften keloids over time. These are available over-the-counter.

  2.  Injections: At Oxona, we use steroids and flurouracil to reduce inflammation and flatten the scar. Several injections may be needed over time.

  3. Cryotherapy: Freezing the keloid with liquid nitrogen can reduce its size, although it may require multiple treatments. We offer this service at our Oxona Healthcare clinics in Oxford and St Albans.

  4. Surgical Excision: In some cases, surgical removal of the keloid may be an option, followed by other treatments to prevent its return. This is particularly suitable for keloids on the ear.

  5. Neodymium magnets These can help flatten keloids when worn consistently. They are only suitable for the keloids caused by earlobe piercings.

How much does it cost?

Surgical removal costs from £175 to £485 depending on location, size and complexity.

Injections of flurouracil and steroids costs from £165.

Cryotherapy costs £155 or £255 depending on size and location.

FAQs

How can I prevent the development of keloid scars

Preventing keloid formation is key for individuals with a known predisposition to these troublesome scars.

  • Firstly, you should keep wounds clean and sterile to reduce the risk of infection, a common trigger for keloids.
  • You should apply silicon sheets to any healing wound for 8 – 10 weeks.
  • You should avoid any unnecessary trauma to the skin, such as piercings or tattoos in keloid-prone areas.
  • Furthermore, early intervention upon noticing any keloid development leads to more effective treatments. Treating keloids within one year of them forming gives greater chances of success.

Do I need to have a pre-op consultation?

Yes, all patients require a pre-op consultation prior to any surgical treatment. During this appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions, and the doctor will discuss the procedure and outcomes, while also providing an exact costing. The doctor may provide different options for surgical treatments, and these tend to have different outcomes. You are advised to take your time to consider the available options and best outcomes for you.

Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?

You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
